I had the pleasure to listen to this book. It was very relatable to me since I have two young children. This books was filled with scientific knowledge about a young child’s development without judgement. A lot of parenting books make you feel like you are not doing enough and are already failing but the author makes it so relatable by acknowledging her own short comings as she raises her two young children. It was so nice to listen to it I was able to finish it in two days that’s how good and easy it was.

When I started looking into family therapy for my mother and me, I immediately hit roadblocks because we live in different states. I started to look for psychologists who were part of the PsyPact and could provide therapy to clients in various states. I came across Bethany Cook, and I am so glad that I did. Dr. B. was approachable and quick to respond to emails. She was easy and flexible to schedule with using a confidential video streaming service for sessions. Besides the basic mechanics of being easy to work with, she was also an incredible therapist. She was able to connect with me (20s, female), my mother (in her 50s), and my brother, also in his 20s, on the level that each of us required. She was disarming with her humor and used her real and direct personality to challenge us in a way that was insightful, but still approachable. She made sessions that could have been wracked with tension and apprehension feel hospitable and safe for each of us. I learned a lot of skills from working with Dr. B., and I felt that she gave my mother and me some important tools to improve communication in our relationship going forward. I would highly recommend Dr. Bethany Cook to anyone looking for family therapy, especially for adult children/parent therapy.

Bethany worked with my son, who was (undiagnosed at the time) on the Autism Spectrum. Oh my goodness!! She was so patient- even when he repeatedly hung up on her, or screamed at her. She ALWAYS found a way to connect, and make things relatable. She would compare topics to things he was super interested in. (Connecting with people or a team= just like Lego pieces all fit together to make a bigger set.) She gave him the space to talk freely, and deal with all of his emotions, to a "neutral party." It wasn't mom, it wasn't a teacher, etc.

Working with Dr. Cook gave me a string of hope, to get to a better place in my life. It was amazing. I was in the lowest place I've ever been. She gave me tools, analogies, and ideas, to help me see clearly. I really felt like I was talking to a friend, and working through a whole lot of stuff. By the end of our calls, I always felt an enormous weight lifted from my shoulders. I felt more calm. I felt like she gave me the breath of fresh air to just "be" for a bit.

This eminently approachable book is a splendid gift to new and expecting parents. Dr. Cook’s candid and humorous descriptions of key aspects of raising infants—intertwined as they are with her perspective as a clinical psychologist as well as her substantial experience in working with infants and their families—provide a rich, non-formulaic framework for parenting. Dr. Cook succeeds admirably in reflecting on her own feelings, experiences, and thoughts in a way that stimulates each of us to consider our own “best practices” for nurturing emotionally intelligent and hardy children.

Dr Cook, has written a vibrant, down-to-earth and insightful account of what it takes to become a parent, how to manage after the baby arrives and how to raise stronger, resilient and kinder children. "For What It's Worth - A Perspective on How to Thrive and Survive Parenting” is a must read for anyone contemplating parenthood or has already started the journey.

I am a veterinarian and do not have children but found this book very thought provoking. It came to my attention because I am surrounded by nieces, nephews and friends having babies. I did not expect to enjoy this book as much as i did. The book is funny and irreverent. I was surprised that my thoughts kept gong to how we raise puppies. Maybe the advice i have learned about their critical weaning stages could be wrong? Should we be letting them cry it out? What does this do to their later behavior? Could our puppy rearing be leading to more adult anxiety and behavior issues?
I recommend this book fo what it's worth to parents of new babies and even new puppies!

As a new mom, I appreciated the raw truth that Dr. Cook brings to the table. Her book is encouraging and inspiring, acknowledging the responsibilities, challenges and achievements that come with raising children. She does this while weaving in exercises on self reflection and personal growth and providing evidence-based context for her approach to parenting. Highly recommend for any parent!

Found this book easy to read and digest. The situations are real and the advice was helpful. This has now become my baby shower go-to gift so others can benefit. Thanks!

Dr. Cook’s book is like having coffee with your best friend. Reading about her tales of parenthood are enlightening, funny and honest. It’s a very easy read, but with a lot of depth and fact based science, you almost forget she’s a clinical psychologist, and not your new best friend. Grab a coffee and this book, you won’t be disappointed.

As a mom to a toddler, I wish I had found this book sooner! Whip smart and funny, Dr. Cook helps me feel like I will survive these challenging times. Even though this book is geared toward the younger ages, the sound principles in the book relate to children of all ages. I just felt like she gets me and the book was an easy read. Well researched and documented, yet not heavy, the advice and humor make this book both one to keep and one to give a friend.

I wish I had this book when my children were born. The narrative of perfection is so prevalent in our culture. Bethany speaks candidly on the balance that all new mothers have to navigate. There is pressure from your own family”s experiences, what medical professionals tell us (which is based on averages), and what we feel in our gut as to what a new baby needs. Unfortunately there is no guide book to the most crucial job on Earth. For What it’s Worth acknowledges the fear of the unknown and gives the new mother permission to gather all the information available and then, listen to their gut and give baby and self what is needed. Such a needed book! Thank you Bethany!!

Dr. Cook shares personal experiences of life as a parent. You will laugh. cry, and find great joy about her experiences. The wisdom she shares throughout the book is priceless and reassuring to anyone who has ever felt they are not capable or unworthy of being a parent.

A great read with some new perspectives! Dr. Cook lays it out with a unique look at pregnancy, parenting, and partnering. Science, humor, compassion, and love... her story illuminates the classic trials and tribulations we all face with a fresh voice. It's worth it!

This is me when I was 3 and had just “trimmed” my bangs for upcoming pictures. I was so proud. Ha!
